What is H.O.M.E. Project? H.O.M.E. means Helping Others, a Methodist Experience. This mission was organized by members of Methodist churches in Ft. Bend County as a way to serve the community. Each spring a group of volunteers donate their time, skills and money to repair the homes of our neighbors. Who are H.O.M.E. Project clients? H.O.M.E. Project clients are residents of Ft. Bend County who are having financial difficulties, senior citizens on fixed incomes or just those who have no means of fixing their homes. This is a way of improving the quality of life for those who can not help themselves. All the work done is a labor of love with no cost to the homeowner. The sites are selected from referrals by social service agencies. When did H.O.M.E. Project start? The first work day in 1995 involved 3 Methodist churches, 30 volunteers and 6 project sites. Since that time we have repaired over 220 sites and spent over $30,000 on materials. The typical annual event involves six to nine churches, 180 to 250 volunteers working on 20 to 25 homes. What are typical H.O.M.E. Projects? Over the years we have tackled all types of repairs. Typical types of repairs and replacements are: brush clean-up, siding and trim, windows, doors, interior and exterior painting, drywall, wheel chair ramps, sink, toilet, and bath, porches and floors, roofs, cabinets and walkways. Just about anything you can do in one day, we can do it. Where has H.O.M.E. Project worked? Project sites have included an old migrant worker camp in Fulshear, trailer homes in Kendleton, clapboard homes in Rosenberg, a 100 year old church in Fresno as well as homes in Missouri City, Stafford, Arcola, Richmond and Old Sugar Land. Who are H.O.M.E. Project volunteers? Although the vast majority of the volunteers are Methodists, we have many volunteers who members of various Christian denominations plus some Hindus and Muslims. The volunteers are people who just wanting to help people. Where does H.O.M.E. Project get its funding? The funds to support these efforts come from the participating churches, the volunteer’s registration fees, individual donations and donations of money, materials and services from local businesses. How can I help H.O.M.E. Project? Of course financial contributions all always welcomed. If you are a merchant or work for a merchant that supplies building materials and you could provide us with a discount or donated materials, then please contact us at donations@umhomeproject.org. Do I really have to be there at 7 a.m.? By far this is the most common question asked. Simply put, "Yes" we request you arrive at the meeting church at or before this time in order to check you in, have some breakfast, make your lunch, introduce you to your site supervisor and say a prayer before sending you out to make a difference in someone's life. The theme for the H.O.M.E. Project is that, “One carpenter can make a difference”. |
